The Uptown Broadway Building has a new tenant on its ground floor. The Chicago Eagle, a leather bar with a long history in the city, reopened in the building at Broadway and Leland over Memorial Day weekend 2026.
The bar is operated by HV Entertainment. Plans for the building also include space for the Baton Show Lounge, the drag cabaret that has been a Chicago institution for decades.
The building
The Uptown Broadway Building, at 4703 N. Broadway, is known for its colorful terra cotta facade, one of the most striking on the North Side. It was built in the 1920s, during the same boom that produced the Uptown Theatre and the Aragon. Its ground-floor storefronts have seen a series of tenants over the years.
Bringing a nightlife operator into the space ties the building more closely to the entertainment district around Broadway and Lawrence, a few blocks south.
What it adds
A bar with an established following brings regular customers, and an established following is what new businesses on a commercial strip often lack. Neighbors in nearby restaurants expect more late-evening foot traffic, especially on weekends.
The opening also fits a broader shift in Chicago’s LGBTQ nightlife. Several longtime venues have moved or reopened in new locations in recent years, and Uptown, with its large historic spaces and transit access, has become a destination.
Questions ahead
As with any new bar, there are practical issues: noise, sidewalk crowds at closing time and coordination with residential neighbors in the buildings nearby. The operators have said they intend to be good neighbors, and the alderman’s office handles licensing questions.
For the Uptown Broadway Building, a steady tenant is good news. Historic buildings need rent-paying businesses to cover maintenance, and few are as costly to maintain as a facade covered in terra cotta.
